Derwen Recycling, part of the Derwen Group, is one of Wales’ cutting edge waste management companies and specialises in the recycling of waste from the commercial, industrial, construction and demolition sectors.  We have been working with the company since 2011.

Our initial work with the company was to map business capabilities, predict future market and legislative trends, identify opportunities and carry out a gap analysis.  We subsequently established a strategy and prepared a business plan to support the future growth of the company's inert waste recycling business.  We worked closely with the business to deliver these plans.

Having successfully worked with the company on the first project we were asked to investigate the feasibility of establishing a resource recovery facility that could provide an alternative to landfill for a significant percentage of commercial, industrial and construction waste arising in the counties of Neath Port Talbot, Bridgend and Swansea.  We undertook and extensive programme of desk and field-based market research and in conjunction with consultants from Technia Environment and Planning, scoped the Town Planning and Environmental Permitting considerations for the facility, before ultimately preparing proposals and a business plan for the development.  We continued to work with the company to deliver the project including the preparation of grant applications and support to secure private sector finance, and were successful in securing £1.25m of grant support from WRAP Cymru's ARID Grant Programme towards the cost of the facility.  The facility opened in 2014 and remains a key part of south west Wales's strategic waste infrastructure.

"We have worked with Technia Business Solutions for a number of years and met following an introduction from WRAP. Their consultant had specific expertise in the recycling sector and we settled into an easy working relationship from day one. We were fortunate to receive support from WRAP's Interim Management programme and that gave us the opportunity to bring in a consultant for two days per week for six months.  This longer term support allowed us to look at the strategic direction of the company, to identify opportunities for growth and investigate their feasibility and to plan for a significant expansion of the business.  With TBSL's support we have subsequently developed and delivered a Resource Recovery Facility at our Neath site to recycle commercial and industrial waste.

Technia have become key members of our team and we have yet to come across a consultancy with their breadth of practical operational knowledge."
